How to Make Cheesy Hash Brown Casserole
Step 1: Prep Your Ingredients
Have you thawed your hash browns? Thawed potatoes mix better and bake more evenly. If they’re still icy, let them sit out for a bit or pop them in the microwave for a few seconds.
Step 2: Mix It Up
In a large mixing bowl, combine the thawed hash browns, melted butter, sour cream, mayonnaise, cheddar cheese soup, shredded cheddar cheese, chopped onion, and pepper. Doesn’t it already smell amazing?
Step 3: Assemble the Casserole
Spread the mixture evenly into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish or a 3 1/2-quart casserole dish. What’s your favorite dish for casseroles?
Step 4: Add the Topping
Sprinkle cheddar cheese over potato mixture. Mix the butter with the crushed ritz crackers and sprinkle over top of the cheese.
Step 5: Bake to Perfection
Bake in a preheated 350°F (175°C) oven for about 45 minutes, or until the casserole is bubbling and golden brown on top. Isn’t the wait worth it?
Tips and Tricks
- Substitutions: Don’t have cheddar cheese soup? Try cream of chicken or cream of mushroom soup for a slight flavor twist.
- Add Protein: Mix in cooked bacon, sausage, ground beef, or diced ham for a heartier dish.
- Switch the Topping: Panko breadcrumbs or crushed potato chips can add a unique crunch if you’re out of Ritz crackers or corn flakes.
- Prep Ahead: Assemble the casserole and refrigerate it for up to 24 hours before baking.
- Freezing Leftovers: Freeze individual portions in airtight containers for a quick reheatable side dish.
