Ingredients for Easy Homemade Amish White Bread

Warm water-make sure your water is warm, 100-110 degrees Fahrenheit. Too cold or to hot your yeast will not activate properly for you homemade bread.

Yeast-active dry yeast

Sugar-I use white sugar in this recipe, but I have seen where people have substituted honey.

Flour-bread flour is recommended; however, you can use all-purpose flour. If you use all-purpose flour your amish bread will have a denser texture. This is a great article on flours and their uses.

Salt-don’t forget the salt! It contributes to the structure and flavor of your bread.

Oil-I use olive, avocado oil or canola oil. You can use any oil you have.

Step By Step Instructions

I use my kitchen aid mixer with the dough attachment to make all my breads. It makes it so easy and alot quicker in my opinion. You can definitely make this by kneading the dough by hand! I have done that also!

Begin by placing the warm water, yeast and sugar in the bowl of your stand mixer. Give it a stir and allow it to sit for about 10 minutes or until it starts to bubble.

Next add your flour, salt and oil of choice. Turn mixer on low speed and mix until dough forms a ball and pulls away from sides of bowl. Turn mixer on medium and knead for 5-minutes or until dough is smooth.

Remove dough from bowl and roll into a ball and place into a bowl that has been lightly oiled. Cover with a clean kitchen towel and sit in a warm place for 1-1 1/2 hours or until it has doubled in size. The rising time will depend on the temperature and humidity of your home.

When your dough has doubled, remove from bowl and punch it down. Spread dough into a large rectangle and cut in 1/2. Roll each 1/2 into a log tucking under the ends. Place each into a greased 9 x 5 bread pan. Cover with clean towel and let rise in a warm spot for about 30 minutes or until bread has risen a good inch above the pan.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees while bread is in its final rise. Bake for 30 minutes. Remove from oven and brush butter on top of each loaf. Remove from pan to a wire cooling rack.
