Ingredients

  • 6 oz dried beef chopped
  • 6 Tbsp butter
  • 6 Tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 4 cups whole milk
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • Pinch nutmeg
  • Optional: paprika or cayenne
  • Optional: parsley
  • 4 slices bread toasted

Instructions

  • Roughly chop the dried beef into bite-sized pieces and set aside.
  • Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
  • Add the chopped dried beef and sauté for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until heated through and lightly browned around the edges.
  • Sprinkle the flour over the dried beef and stir continuously for 1 minute to cook out the raw flour taste and form a roux.
  • Slowly pour in the milk, whisking constantly as you add it to create a smooth gravy without lumps.
  • Continue cooking over medium heat, stirring frequently, until the gravy thickens and coats the back of a spoon, about 5 to 8 minutes.
  • Stir in the freshly grated nutmeg and freshly ground black pepper to taste. The nutmeg adds a subtle warmth and depth of flavor that enhances the creamy gravy without overpowering the savory dried beef.
  • Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 1 to 2 minutes, allowing the flavors to come together.
  • Spoon the creamed dried beef generously over warm toasted bread and serve immediately.

Notes

When it comes to the nutrition information provided for recipes, it’s important to keep in mind that it’s just an estimate. The actual nutritional values can vary based on the specific ingredients and brands you use. Notes

    • Dried beef is naturally salty, so taste before adding any additional salt.
    • Whole milk creates the richest gravy, but 2% milk may be substituted.
    • If the gravy becomes too thick, whisk in a splash of milk until it reaches your desired consistency.
    • Serve over toast, biscuits, English muffins, or even home fries for a delicious variation.
