My mother made this every Christmas Eve they are a family favorite. I make them and freeze them in gallon bags or airtight containers, then you can pull as many as you want out and bake them for about 5 minutes. Talk about a quick and easy appetizer! These easy crab muffin appetizers are perfect for entertaining because you can make them ahead and bake only a few minutes in the oven.
After you spread the cheese mixture onto each, cut the crab melts into 4 wedges. Which makes for the perfect bite size. Then freeze them on a cookie sheet and after they are frozen toss them in a gallon freezer bag or airtight container. Leave them whole, and 2 muffins make the perfect lunch or brunch dish!
Ingredients For Crab Muffins:
crab meat: canned crabmeat, fresh crabmeat, a package crab meat or I have even used imitation crab meat in a pinch, and it turned out great also, just finely chopped it.
kraft old english cheese spread: I do recommend this cheese; I have tried many other jarred cheese and the results are just not the same for the crab muffin appetizers
butter: softened
onion: finely chopped
english muffins halves: split with a fork-don’t slice your english muffins with a knife. It defeats the purpose of the nooks and crannies!
paprika: for garnish
Optional toppings or addins:
Sprinkle cheddar cheese, chopped green onion, on top before baking. Garlic powder or garlic salt. Add a few dashes of tabasco or cayenne pepper to the creamy crab mixture for a kick. A pinch of old bay seasoning sprinkled on top is delicious also.
How to Make Crab Appetizers
Split your english muffins using a fork and place on a cookie sheet. In a medium bowl cream, the softened stick butter and kraft old english cheese spread together. Combine crabmeat and chopped onion with the creamed mixture. Spread on the english muffin half. Sprinkle with paprika. Place on a parchment paper lined baking sheet.
Place in freezer for about an hour until they are frozen. Cut each muffin into 4 wedges. I always cut them after they are frozen because it gives a cleaner cut. You can either freeze them in gallon bags for future use at this point or bake in the oven about 5 minutes or until they are golden brown and bubbly. They are great hot or served at room temperature. These make a great item to have in the freezer for unexpected guests!
