Homemade Pizza Crust is easy and fun to make! There is just something special about making your own homemade pizza. The foundation of a great pizza is the crust. Without a good crust it won’t matter what your toppings are the pizza won’t be good. And you can top it with whatever toppings you want!

Let’s Talk Flour In Pizza Crust

There are several kinds of flour that you can use when making homemade pizza crust. The type of flour you choose will affect the texture and flavor of your crust.

  1. All-purpose is the most common type of flour used in pizza crust recipes. It’s a versatile flour that works well for most pizza crusts.
  2. Bread flour has a higher protein content than all-purpose flour, which creates a chewier texture in the crust. It’s a good choice if you like a thicker, more substantial crust.
  3. Using whole wheat flour in your pizza crust will add more nutrition and fiber to your pizza. However, it will also make the crust denser and heavier.
  4. 00 flour is a finely milled flour made from soft wheat. It’s mostly used in Italian pizza recipes and creates a very thin and crispy crust.
  5. If you’re gluten intolerant or allergic, there are several gluten-free flours you can use to make pizza crust, such as rice flour, almond flour, or a gluten-free flour blend. I have never used these flours for pizza dough so I can’t say how they turn out.

Making The Crust

This recipe consists of flour (whichever kind you prefer), water, yeast, olive oil, salt, Italian Seasoning and garlic powder. I use my kitchen aid mixer with the dough attachment for this recipe, it takes all the work out of it, but you can certainly make this by hand. All ingredients are mixed up than kneaded using the dough hook until it becomes a smooth ball, about 5 minutes. Then left until doubled in size – 30 minutes or so. Easy homemade pizza crust recipe, turns out great every time! This recipe makes 1 – 15" crust or 2- 10 inch thin crusts.

  • Place warm water, yeast and sugar in the bowl of your stand mixer and let sit for a few minutes. Add flour and rest of ingredients and using the dough hook attachment mix on low speed until a ball forms. If your dough is too dry add a drizzle of water -If your dough is too sticky add a bit of flour.

  • Once your ball forms increase speed to medium-high and knead for 5 minutes.
  • Remove dough from mixer bowl and shape into a round ball. Place in a bowl and drizzle with a little olive oil rubbing over entire dough.

  • Cover with a clean kitchen towel and place in a warm location until doubled in size. about 30 minutes.

  • Remove risen dough from the bowl. You can freeze the dough if you are not to use it now.

  • Place dough onto a lightly floured surface and stretch your dough into a 15 " circle (you can make 1 – 15" or 2 – 10" thin crusts with this recipe.) or whatever shape you want. If your dough doesn't stretch easily lay it down and allow it to rest for a few minutes. You can also use a rolling pin to roll the dough.

  • Preheat your oven to 450℉ and place pizza stone in oven if you are using one.
  • Once you have your dough shaped, prick all over top with a fork to prevent air bubbles. Top with all your favorite toppings. Using a pizza peel dusted with a little cornmeal to keep pizza from sticking. Place on a sheet pan lined with parchment paper or slide onto your preheated pizza stone (recommended) and bake at 450℉ for 12-14 minutes or until bubbly and the crust is browned.

  • If you want to par-bake your crust for later, prick with fork and bake on a sheet pan lined with parchment paper or preheated pizza stone (recommended) for 5 minutes in a preheated 450 ℉ oven.
